Biographic Notes
Nuno C. Santos is assistant professor at the Departamento de Física e Astronomia/Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto. He was awarded a first degree in Physics at the Universidade de Lisboa (Faculdade de Ciências) in 1996, and a Master degree in Astronomy & Astrophysics at the same university. In 2002 he ended his PhD at the University of Geneva (Observatoire de Genève), Switzerland, under the supervision of Prof. Michel Mayor. Following a first pos-doc in Geneva, he then integrated the teams in CAAUL (2003) and CAUP (2007), now merged to form IA (2015).

Current main research interests focus on Planetary System's science, leading in IA the thematic line on Towards the detection and characterization of other Earths. Author of more than 300 refereed papers in high impact journals, Nuno C. Santos is expert in exoplanet research, having led several key results in planet search projects using radial velocity and transit methods, on the study of the star planet connection, and on the study of exoplanet atmospheres. Examples include the detection of the first possible rocky planet orbiting a solar type star (2004), and pioneer studies about the effects of stellar chemical abundances on planet frequency and composition. For these latter, in 2010 he was offered, together with Prof. Michel Mayor and Prof. Garik Israelian, the 1st Viktor Ambartsumian International prize.

In the context of exoplanet research he is involved in several key instrumentation projects, including: Co-PI of the ESPRESSO (ESO) and Co-I of the NIRPS spectrographs, board member of the CHEOPS and PLATO missions (ESA), and member of the steering committee of the HIRES@ELT instrument.
