Call for one research fellowship for a researcher with PhD in the field of galaxy formation and evolution

Ref: IA2018-32-BID

The Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço (IA) is the most prominent research unit in the field of Astrophysics in Portugal, integrating researchers from the University of Porto and the University of Lisbon, and is responsible for a major fraction of the national productivity in international ISI journals in this area. The research and development effort at the IA includes most of the topics at the forefront of research in Astrophysics and Space Sciences, complemented by work on instrumentation and systems with potential use in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

One Research Fellowship for a researcher with a PhD in the field of galaxy formation and evolution is open at the FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, for the Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço (IA), in the context of the strategic project UID/FIS/04434/2013 with financial support provided by FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC) through national funds, under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area: Astronomy and Astrophysics

2. Requirements for admission: The applicant must have completed a PhD degree in Astronomy, Physics or similar. The applicant must have experience with the processing and analysis of data from optical telescopes, in the context of the search for very high redshift galaxies.

3. Factors preferred: Experience in programming languages (eg: IDL, Fortran).

4. Work plan: The successful candidate will participate in the selection of very high redshift candidates from deep HST and ground-based telescopes observations. The activity will also support the development of the science observations.

5. Legislation framework: Statute of the Scientific Research Fellowship, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, as amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, and as amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law No. 12/2013, of January 29, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July; And also by the FCT, I.P. 6. Place of work: The work will be developed at IA, in Lisbon under the scientific guidance of one of the researchers of the respective IA Thematic Line.

7. Fellowship duration: The position is opened for 3 months and will begin on October 2018, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation of Research Fellowships from the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.

8. Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts to € 1495 (tax free), according to table values of the fellowships awarded directly by the FCT, IP. (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores).
The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, pursuant to Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social. The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer. Funds for traveling (conferences, collaborations, observing missions) are also available.

9. Selection method: The applicant must have completed a PhD degree. Only applications from candidates having an adequate background in Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics, or other relevant domains, will be considered. The curricular evaluation of the candidates will be done based on:

- Cover letter (20%);

- CV (40%);

- Relevance and adequacy of previous research experience to the priorities of the team and of IA (40%).

The selection committee may decide on the need to have an interview for a second stage of evaluation (by teleconference or videoconference if needed). In that case, the final grade will be obtained by averaging the result of the first stage evaluation with the interview (equal weights). Following the evaluation process the contracts will be offered according to the ordering proposed by the selection committee. The positions will be granted only if suitable candidates are found. Only candidates with a minimum grade of 60% will be accepted. The selected candidates will be notified by e-mail.
