Call for one research fellowship for Master in the field of cosmology

Ref: IA2018-33-BIM

The Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço (IA) is the most prominent research unit in the field of Astrophysics in Portugal, integrating researchers from the University of Porto and the University of Lisbon, and is responsible for a major fraction of the national productivity in international ISI journals in this area. The research and development effort at the IA includes most of the topics at the forefront of research in Astrophysics and Space Sciences, complemented by work on instrumentation and systems with potential use in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

One research fellowship for Master in the field of cosmology is open at the FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, for the Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço (IA), in the context of the strategic project UID/FIS/04434/2013 with financial support provided by FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC) through national funds, under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area: Astronomy and Astrophysics

2. Requirements for admission: The applicant must have completed a Master’s degree in Astronomy, Physics or similar. The applicant must have experience on the exploitation of cosmological codes, for example CLASS, and knowledge about Bayesian inference methods.

3. Factors preferred: Experience in programming languages (eg: IDL, Fortran).

4. Work plan: The successful candidate will study cosmological structure formation in dark energy models. He/she is expected to carry out theoretical analyses by modifying public Boltzmann codes. The impact on weak lensing observables will also be assessed as well as the models' potential to be constrained by the upcoming Euclid survey.

5. Legislation framework: Statute of the Scientific Research Fellowship, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, as amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, and as amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law No. 12/2013, of January 29, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July; And also by the FCT, I.P. Fellowships Regulation, in force (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT.pdf) and FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation, as approved on 23rd February 2017.

6. Place of work: The work will be developed at IA, in Lisbon under the scientific guidance of one of the researchers of the respective IA Thematic Line.

7. Fellowship duration: The position is opened for 3 months and will begin on October 2018, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation of Research Fellowships from the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.

8. Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts to € 980 (tax free), according to table values of the fellowships awarded directly by the FCT, IP. (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores).
The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, pursuant to Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social. The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer. Funds for traveling (conferences, collaborations, observing missions) are also available.

9. Selection method: The applicant must have completed an MSc degree. Only applications from candidates having an adequate background in Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics, or other relevant domains, will be considered. The curricular evaluation of the candidates will be done based on:

- Cover letter (20%);

- CV (40%);

- Relevance and adequacy of previous research experience to the priorities of the team and of IA (40%).

The selection committee may decide on the need to have an interview for a second stage of evaluation (by teleconference or videoconference if needed). In that case, the final grade will be obtained by averaging the result of the first stage evaluation with the interview (equal weights). Following the evaluation process the contracts will be offered according to the ordering proposed by the selection committee. The positions will be granted only if suitable candidates are found. Only candidates with a minimum grade of 60% will be accepted. The selected candidates will be notified by e-mail.

10. Selection Committee: José Afonso (chair); Ciro Pappalardo; Francisco Lobo; Nelson Nunes; António Silva (alternate)

11. Publication/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation will become public, through ordered list final grade obtained which will be posted at the entrance hall of the FCiências.ID, located at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, C1 bdg – 3rd floor, Campo Grande, 1749-016 Lisboa, and the selected candidate will be notified by e-mail.

12. Deadlines: This call for applications is open from 19th September to 2 October of 2018.

13. Application: Applications must be submitted through the web form below, and must include the following information:

- Cover letter with a brief description of the candidate's experience and motivation;

- Curriculum Vitae (up to 4 pages in 10pt size format at minimum) and a scan of the PhD degree diploma;

- A complete list of scientific publications;

- Name and contact details (position, email, address) of two referees, available to provide information about the candidate (to be contacted if considered necessary to clarify the information provided in the remaining documents).

NOTE: Please note that Degrees obtained in foreign countries need a Portuguese Recognition certificate and, in some cases, a equivalence certificate issued by a Portuguese high degree institution according to the Decree-Law nr. 341/2007, of Oct 12th, the ministerial order nr. 29/2008, of Jan 10th and the ministerial order nr. 227/2017, of July 25th.
