Studying the Universe in Very-High-Energy gamma rays

Marc Ribó

Abstract
The Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) HESS, MAGIC and VERITAS have revolutionized the field of Very High Energy gamma-ray astrophysics. From a handful of exotic sources known in 2003 we now know more than 200 sources, which provide physical insight into different types of galactic and extragalactic sources and fundamental physics studies of the Universe.
In this talk I will provide a brief introduction to the technique used by IACTs and I will review the most interesting results found by these experiments up to now, from binary systems to SNR, from starburst galaxies to AGNs and related multi-messenger astrophysics. In the last part of the talk I will present the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy that is currently being built, and I will provide an overview of its Key Science Projects that will be conducted during the following decade.
