Abstract
Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter in the atomic and molecular scale. It has had widespread technological applications, and many more are planned for the future. The single most important event that boosted the field was the launch, in the 80's, of a research programme to look for carbon chains in the interstellar medium. The programme lead, among the other things, to the discovery of the fullerene, i.e. a football of the diameter of 1 nanometer, and to the Nobel prize for Kroto, Smalley and Curl. I would like to discuss the astrophysical legacy of such programme.
