Abstract

ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph) is the high-resolution, fiber fed spectrograph to be installed as a second-generation instrument on the upcoming ELT (Extremely Large Telescope). Equipped with two movable arms, ANDES is able to simultaneously collect light from the science target and the sky background, with a sky-projected distance between the fibers 15” ≤ d ≤ 132”. Since there is no field de-rotator, the sky background fiber will sample different patches of the sky during an exposure. In this paper we describe the “ANDES star avoidance” algorithm to automatically calculate the initial position and the shifts to be applied on the sky arm during an exposure to keep it at a safe distance from all known astrophysical sources and avoid light contamination.
