The Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) has opened a call for PhD fellowships. Applications can be submitted, from the 1st to the 31st of March 2023. The positions are for up to 4 years (tuition fees are covered). The selection is done by FCT.

The Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço (IA) will support applications through its research groups. If you are interested in doing a PhD with us, please contact the group leader of the area that is more suitable for you, or alternatively the IA researcher that you see as potential supervisor or co-supervisor. Please see the list below for the contacts of the group leaders:

     - Towards the detection and characterization of other Earths - Nuno Santos
     - Towards a comprehensive study of starsTiago Campante
     - The assembly history of galaxies resolved in space and time - Polychronis Papaderos
     - Unveiling the dynamics of the UniverseTiago Barreiro
     - Astronomical Instrumentation and Systems - Alexandre Cabral
     - Science Communication (*) - João Retrê and Filipe Pires

*for projects in Science Communication and Science Education

IA is the most prominent research unit in the field of Astrophysics in Portugal, integrating researchers from the Universidade do Porto, the Universidade de Lisboa, and the Universidade de Coimbra, and is responsible for a major fraction of the national productivity in international ISI journals in this area.

The research and development effort at the IA includes most of the topics at the forefront of research in Astrophysics and Space Sciences, complemented by work on instrumentation and systems with potential use in Astronomy and Astrophysics. It is promoted by wide-ranging science communication activities that enhance public understanding of the Universe, as well as awareness of the importance of research in this field.

It is considered strategically important for IA to be optimally placed to contribute to the development and exploitation of large projects within the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO), besides other international initiatives.

All applications must follow the FCT regulations for research grants.
