Call for one research fellowship for Doctor

The Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço (IA) assembles more than two-thirds of all active researchers working in Space Sciences in Portugal, and is responsible for an even greater fraction of the national productivity in international ISI journals in this area. The research and development effort at the IA includes most of the topics at the forefront of research in Astrophysics and Space Sciences, complemented by work on instrumentation and systems with potential use in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

One research fellowship (Bolsa de Investigação) for Doctor is open at the FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, for the IA - Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences, UID/FIS/04434/2013, financed by national funds by FCT / MCTES (PIDDAC), under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area: Astronomy and Astrophysics

2. Requirements for admission: The applicant must have completed a doctoral degree by the date of submission.

3. Work plan: The successful candidate will participate in the EFTCAMB code, which implements the Effective Field Theory formalism for Dark Energy and Modified Gravity in the Einstein-Boltzmann solver CAMB, creating a bridge between theory and observations.

4. Legislation framework: Statute of the Scientific Research Fellowship, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, as amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, and as amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law No. 12/2013, of January 29, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July; And also by the FCT, I.P. Fellowships Regulation, in force (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT.pdf) and FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation, as approved on 23rd February 2017.

5. Place of work: The work will be developed at IA, in Lisbon under the scientific guidance of one of the researchers of the respective IA Thematic Line.

6. Fellowship duration: The position is opened for 6 months and will begin on May of 2018, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation of Research Fellowships from the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.

7. Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts to € 1495 (tax free), according to table values of the fellowships awarded directly by the FCT, IP. (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores).

The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any  social protection scheme can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, pursuant to Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social. The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer. Funds for traveling (conferences, collaborations, observing missions) are also available.

8. Selection method: The applicant must have completed a PhD degree. Only applications from candidates having an adequate background in Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics, or other relevant domains, will be considered. The curricular evaluation of the candidates will be done based on:

- Cover letter (10%);
- CV, including the relevance of their publications (50%);
- Relevance and adequacy of previous research experience and research plan to the priorities of the team and of IA (40%).

Following the evaluation process the contracts will be offered according to the ordering proposed by the selection committee. The positions will be granted only if suitable candidates are found. Only candidates with a minimum grade of 60% will be accepted. The selected candidates will be notified by e-mail

10. Publication/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation will become public, through ordered list final grade obtained which will be posted at the entrance hall of the FCiências.ID, located at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, C1 bdg – 3rd floor, Campo Grande, 1749-016 Lisboa, and the selected candidate will be notified by e-mail.

11. Deadlines: This call for applications is open from 6th to 19th April of 2018.
