Call for up to 5 (five) Scientific Initiation Studentships (BIC) - Porto

A call for up to 5 (five) Scientific Initiation Studentships (Bolsa de Iniciação Científica, BIC) is open at the Centro de Investigação em Astronomia/Astrofísica da Universidade do Porto (CAUP), for Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço (IA). The positions are offered in the context of the project UID/FIS/04434/2019 with financial support provided by the FCT/MCTES through national funds (PIDDAC).

This call is open under the following conditions:

1.- Scientific area: Astronomy and Astrophysics

2.- Requirements for admission: The applicants must be students at least in the second year of training in the areas of Astronomy/Astrophysics, Physics and Physical Engineering, registered for the first time in one of the following degrees in a Portuguese University:
  • first cycle (first degree) in astronomy, physics, or related,
  • integrated master in physical engineering, or related.
3.- Work plan: IA assembles more than two-thirds of all active researchers working in Space Sciences in Portugal, and is responsible for an even greater fraction of the national productivity in international ISI journals in this area. The research and development effort at IA includes most of the topics at the forefront of research in Astrophysics ans Space Sciences, complementary by work on instrumentation and systems with potential use in Astronomy and Astrophysics. This call is open in the context of research activities conducted by the IA Thematic Lines. Successful applicants will be developing a project at the IA, supervised by an IA researcher. A list of the available projects can be found here. BIC holders shall have access to IA facilities, including a work space. All candidates must present the outcome of their research at one of the seminars organized by the IA . At the end of the grant, successful candidates will receive a certificate.

4.- Legislation framework: The fellowship contract will comply with the 'Regulamento de Bolsas e Investigação da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia' existing (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT.pdf) and 'Lei nº 40/2004, de 18 de Agosto (Estatuto do Bolseiro de InvestigaçãoCientífica)'. The IA regulation for the ''Incentive Program for the Training of Excellence of Young Researchers in Astrophysics and Space Sciences'' should also be consulted.

5.- Place of work: The work will be developed at the Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço, Porto node under the scientific guidance of an IA researcher.

6.- Fellowship duration: Each scholarship is opened for three months and will begin on March/April 2019, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation of Research Fellowships from the FCT. The BICs cannot be accumulated with any other grant. Each student can only receive one BIC in the context of this program.

7.- Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts to €385,00/month, according to table values of the fellowships awarded directly by FCT (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance.

8.- Selection method: Candidates will be assessed by the quality of their CV (40%) and their academic record (60%).

    • the degree in which the student is currently registered and year he/she is attending;
    • computational skills and relevant expertise.
  • Copy of the student's updated academic record.

Projects will be chosen by the selected candidates, once contacted by order of selection, and considering the distribution by thematic lines.

The positions will be granted only if suitable candidates are found.
